I was born in remote western Queensland, Australia where I spent my childhood years on a sheep station. I moved to the city of Brisbane for secondary school and university and later completed visual art studies at Queensland College of Art. I have been exhibiting my work regularly since 1995.
Recently I have relocated north of Brisbane to live on the Sunshine Coast hinterland. My studio is at the top of a ridge. The land drops away through forest to eventually reach a creek in the valley. My artwork has been influenced by my new surroundings.
I am interested in the complex density of the forest, the moving patterns of light and shade and the many subtly different greens of leaves. A landscape can evoke a sense of fear or feelings of mystery and wonder which I wish to describe in paint. I aim to express a sense of the particular place, of what it feels like to be there.
Drawing is a fundamental part of my practice and many of my completed works, such as the one below, would be described as drawings rather than as paintings.
