My work ‘The Memory’ (below) has been selected for inclusion in the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing 2020, to be exhibited at the Adelaide Perry Gallery, PLC, Croydon, Sydney from 29 February 2020 to 27 March 2020.
The making of this drawing preceded the recent bushfires, but the signs were already clear that native wildlife and vegetation were under threat from escalating environmental catastrophe. I wanted to express my appreciation of the beauty and delicacy of the melaleuca in flower, while the blackness of the background portends trouble.
This small painting ‘Harpullia’ is included in the Saving Toondah; Artists for Moreton Bay exhibition at Woolloongabba Art Gallery, Brisbane 19 – 30 November 2019. All works are donated by contributing artists and all proceeds of sales go to Birdlife Australia for their campaign to preserve the wetlands of Toondah Harbour. The Moreton Bay wetland habitat of migratory and other wetland birds is under threat from a major development.

‘From the drama of the storm cloud about to release its power, to the imperceptible but constant movements of a growing tree as it stretches towards the sky, the world is awe-inspiring. I am interested in how our primal psychology responds to the forces of nature.’

This painting’s cloudy image could be read either as the merging pattern of river with ocean, as the plume from a chimney or as smoke from an explosion.
‘Closer’ has been selected for the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition 2016 held at the South Australian Museum, Adelaide.
The painting could be variously read as a storm cloud, as industrial emissions, a dust storm, smoke from a bush fire, or as ash pouring from a volcano. Cloud symbolises the nebulous, the uncertainty of knowing how to pace the use of natural resources against the environment’s natural rate of recovery. My intention is in no way didactic or to seek objectivity. I aim for ambiguity rather than to make a statement or declare an answer.
My painting ‘Flutter/Lurk’ has been acquired by Jupiters Hotel, Surfers Paradise as part of the refurbishment of their suites.
